How to install Zellige Tile
Zellige tiles are a beautiful and versatile option for any tile project. However, they can be a bit tricky to install. Here are a few tips to help you get the job done right:
- Upon receipt of your shipment, inspect the tiles but keep in mind that variations in glaze consistency and color are common in Zellige due to the ancient methods used in production. The expected color range should be based on a sampling of at least three tiles to accurately represent the color range expected in a shipment. Crazing, pitting, and chipping are to be expected in Zellige - crazing refers to the hairline cracks which can be present on the glazed face of these tiles after firing. Zellige is also hand-chiseled, meaning there will be variations in width, length and thickness from tile to tile.
- Plan your layout. Before you start installing the tiles, take some time to plan out your layout. This will help you avoid any mistakes and ensure that the tiles look their best. DO NOT install Zellige from unblended boxes.
- Zellige houd be stokend in water for 1-2 minutes prior to installation.
- Prepare the surface. The surface you're installing the tiles on needs to be clean, dry, and free of any imperfections. If the surface is not level, you'll need to use a leveling compound to create a smooth surface.
- Apply the adhesive. Use a trowel to apply a thin layer of adhesive to the sub-surface and a second layer to the back of each tile. Be sure to apply the adhesive evenly so that the tiles are level.
- Install the tiles. Press the tiles firmly into place, starting in one corner and working your way across the surface. You may want to use wedge spacers to ensure that the tiles are evenly spaced and have a level surface.
- If you are using our Unglazed Old Fashion tile, you must use a penetrating sealer prior to grout and again after grout due to the porous nature of unglazed terracotta.
- Grout the tiles. Once the tiles are in place and adhesive is dry, use a grout float to apply grout to the spaces between the tiles. Be sure to wipe away any excess grout with a damp sponge.
- Seal grout and tile with a penetrating sealer. This will help to protect the grout from stains and water damage.
As always, we recommend consulting with a tile professional for the best outcome with your Zellige tile installation.
